How Often Should You Test Your Smoke Alarms?

October 28 2015Smoke alarms are perhaps one of the most important devices to have in your home. They alert you of any smoke so you can evacuate your family to safety. Therefore, you should check your smoke detectors at least once a month and change the batteries twice a year (use Daylight Savings Time as a reminder).

    Why test?

    • The batteries in smoke detectors die over time, leaving a non-functioning alarm. Even hard-wired alarms have back up batteries.
    • Smoke detectors can’t live forever, they wear out over time!

    Definitely check if…

    • False alarms keep happening
    • Short beeps come from the detector
    • Kitchen smoke caused alarm to sound often which decreases battery life

How do I test my smoke alarm?

    1. It’s a good idea to alert the people in your home before you test the alarm. That way no one panics!
    2. Have someone stand in the farthest part of the house so you know how far the alarm reaches.
    3. Press and hold the test button for a few seconds on the device. Most detectors have this button so there’s no confusion. If the sound is barely audible, then replace the batteries and test again.
    4. Dust around the smoke alarm to keep it clean from any dirt that could block the grates.
    5. If your smoke detector is out of reach, just purchase an aerosol can of smoke and point!
Testing your smoke alarms is fast and easy. A simple check once a month offers reassurance that your family will be immediately aware of any smoke in the house. Also, make sure your family knows what to do in case that happens!
