How Often Should You Inspect the Weatherstripping around Your House?

    October 26 2015

As the weather gets cooler, the heat gets cranked up in our homes to stay comfortable. However, it’s during these times when drafts are quickly noticed. Stay ahead of the game by inspecting your weatherstripping up to two times a year.

Weatherstripping windows and doors around the house is important as it saves up to 30% on energy bills by stopping cold air from entering. Unfortunately, the strips don’t last forever. They can become damaged, making their job pretty much useless. That’s why a simple check of all the weatherstripping in your home in the spring and/or fall is important!

    Checking is easy:

    1. Visual Check: Inspect the weatherstripping of a door or window by looking for any missing chunks, damage, or compression. You can also see if there’s any light shining through the seal by closing the window/door. These are signs that you should definitely replace the stripping.

    2. Manual Check: If you’re still not sure, you can burn incense and hold up to the door/window frame while watching for any fluttering of the smoke. For closed doors, you can try pulling a dollar bill from under to see how easy it is. The easier it is, the more likely it’s time for some replacing!

    3. If you find any damages to the weatherstripping, simply cut away the piece and replace with a brand new one. There are a few different types (adhesive foam tape, rubber, vinyl, and spring mold) so make sure you get the right one!

The process of checking your weatherstripping is quick and painless. Not doing the inspection puts you at risk of higher energy bills and colder feet in the winter time. Better safe than sorry!
