It’s that time of year again! We say goodbye to the warm memories of summer and get ready for the upcoming winter season. One of the most important things you can do to prepare is by correctly shutting down your pool so it’s ready for next year.

Check the Water

1. Using a Pool Water Test Kit, make sure the pH level is between 7.2-7.6. Adjust levels as needed.

2. Check the water hardness which should be between 175-225 ppm (parts per million). Adjust levels as needed.

3. Check the alkalinity which should be between 80-125ppm in plaster/gunite pools or 125-

150ppm in all others. Adjust accordingly.

4. Make sure chlorine levels are 1-4ppm and stabilizer levels are 30ppm to discourage bacterial growth.

Cleaning

1. Remove and clean all ladders, diving boards, and filters thoroughly. Make sure to soak and drain filters. Store in a safe dry place.

2. Use a skimmer to clean away any debris. Use a pool brush and vacuum to scrub the walls and floors clean.

3. Add granular chlorine.

4. Add algaecide to prevent algae growth.

Final Pool Closing

1. Drain the water level:

• Painted/Natural Finished Pools-6″ below skimmer opening
• Vinyl- 1″ below skimmer opening
• Mesh or no covers-18-24″ below skimmer opening
• Plaster with solid cover- 1-6″ below skimmer opening

2. Install freeze plugs.

3. For colder climates, add pool anti-freeze and drain pool lines to avoid bursting.

4. Cover pool.

Though it’s a pain, properly closing your pool is important so you don’t accrue any damages during the winter as these can be costly. Closing down your pool the right way ensures a fun summer next year without any annoying hassles.
